Selectively disable desktop effects?

Is there a way to disable a desktop effect for a particular application? I ask because Desktop Effects > Focus > Dialog Parent is great, except when it dims Krita while you’re trying to apply a filter or something and you can’t see the colors properly because of the darkened parent window.

You can use a window rule for specific apps to block compositing.

Create a window rule for Krita, click Add Property at the bottom-left, then search for “block” to block compositing for Krita (or any other app).

I had hoped I could avoid the nuclear option!

Nuclear would be to disable compositing (or the dim effect) entirely.
A window rule is more like an arrow to the knee.

In any case, you could try to set specific Krita windows to block compositing, but this would get very tedious very quickly.

For sure. I think I’m just doing to, with a heavy heart, turn off the effect.

It’s your choice, but I don’t see why you would when you could use a window rule.
I wouldn’t let the emotion of disappointment convince me to give up something that works for everything else.

Instead, I’d file a feature request at bugs.kde.org. Three actually:

  • keyboard shortcut to toggle effects for the whole desktop
  • keyboard shortcut to toggle effects for the current application
  • keyboard shortcut to toggle effects for the current window

And being that your usage of Krita, a KDE package, is why you need this feature, I am sure other artists, both professionals and hobbyists, would agree that this is needed.
