After restarting the PC, I was able to access the login manager without any problems.
The password entry field (password was correct) of the login manager was grayed out and no longer allowed any input. After about 30-45 seconds, I was able to log in to the KDE desktop by pressing the ENTER key. The behavior was reproducible after every restart of the PC.
Why won’t the KDE desktop start (after entering the correct password)?
At present, I can only advise everyone not to perform a system update until the problem has been resolved.
My system:

None of the packages in the last batch of updates have anything to do with SDD, though.
No issues here on my PC, and am about to reboot my laptop just to see.

No issues on the laptop.
Which makes it harder to figure out a culprit.

I can reproduce the same behavior on two systems. I’ll attach some photos.
@claydoh Do you have a solution for how to solve this problem?
Otherwise, I would create a bug report. Where would I post this error when posting? Can you give me a tip?

Sorry, I have no idea other than to see if your logs show anything, unless someone else sees the same thing.

Hi @claydoh thank you for your answer.
Is there a log file where I can see what is happening in the login manager that I could post?
Bluelupo
Usually the logs are in the system journal.
Use the journalctl command to view logs.
For example sudo journalctl -b 0 show all the logs since boot.
See man journalctl for options to grep in the logs (-g), only show logs for certain service (-u service-name), etc

There should be systemd logs for this, probably the easiest way:
For only SDDM
journalctl -u sddm --since yesterday
or similar. You can leave out the time switch
KSystemLog can be used as well, though that might be broken and need a workaround

@claydoh Here is the issue of the journal.
$ sudo journalctl -u sddm --since "18 hours ago"

@bluelupo :
What happens if, you clean out the affected user’s ~/.cache/ directory before they login?
Does this happen for the case of only one user on the system?
What happens if, you create a new, fresh, Test User?

Hi @Franken14679
Deleting the .cache directory of the existing user (before logging in) has no effect. If I create a new user and then log in again immediately, it works without me having to press the ENTER key once or several times. Subsequent logins with the new user also work correctly.
However, I would be reluctant to delete the existing original user and replace it with a new user, as this would result in the loss of a large number of configurations.
Is it possible to narrow down which configuration is causing the error? If the .cache directory does not fix the error, then perhaps a configuration from the .config directory will.
Greetings
Bluelupo
yes, and it’s rather tedious might also need to repeat for
~/.local
# brute force troubleshooting...
mv ~/.config ~/.configBORKED
# logout and log back in again to force plasma to recreate the folder with default settings
dolphin --split ~/.config ~/.configBORKED
# copy back half of the BORKED folder contents at a time and relog to see if issue returns
# if it does, then delete the folder again, relog, and only copy half of that previous half
# repeat until the culprit is found, then finally, copy back everything BUT that culprit bit

Unfortunately, your suggestion did not have a positive effect on the error.
I created a completely new user (michael) (deleted the old one with the same name). After that, I was able to log in again without pressing ENTER twice.
Then I copied the .config and .local directories back from the “old” user (to the new user). Some of the settings were restored, but unfortunately not all of them. But I can live with that now.
Nevertheless, I would like to know what caused the error. Furthermore, the solution I described can only be a workaround.
my understanding is there should be no difference between a new user and an existing user which has deleted all three of these folders.
~/.cache
~/.config
~/.local
that should result in the system recreating all the user defaults from scratch, just like it would do for a new user.
the only other thing i can think of is if you have made root level changes to that users permissions or modified their profile / shell resources in some way that could have made a difference.
I found the solution to my login problem. The problem was caused by .bash_profile.
I had set up an ssh systemd service for a user there.
Unfortunately, the following lines blocked the KDE start. As soon as I removed these two lines, everything worked smoothly.
# User systemd Service ~/.config/systemd/user/ssh-agent.service
export SSH_AUTH_SOCK=“$XDG_RUNTIME_DIR/ssh-agent.socket”
I then moved the line to .bashrc, where it no longer interferes with the start of KDE.
