I’m a newbie and appreciated these two:
How to replicate the Outlook-adjacent layout:
- Go into “Configure Kmail” and under Appearance > Layout you can find a selector with “Long Folder List” or “Short Folder List”, click in “Short”
- Under that you have “Show Favourite Folders View”, click in “Never”.
- Right click on the toolbar, click “Icon Size” and increase to preference
- Right click again, and select “Text” and then “text under icons”
- Then you just need to hide the menubar (ctrl+m which should stick to next time you start Kmail too, just remember that shortcut) and you should be fine.
- Tick “Show the message preview pane next to the message list”.
- Under the Message Tags tab, you can set tags for categorizing your email. In the screenshot I chose red on black for URGENT and cyan on black for TO DO, ticking Enable toolbar button so that their buttons appear on the toolbar for easy tagging.
Navigate KMail with less effort.
Moving to the Next/Previous message uses n

similar to less
. Let’s carry over additional less
shortcut keys to make keyboard navigation even easier:
Ctrl+Alt+,
to bring up keyboard shortcuts, and then change the following:
Find in Message
→/
Scroll Message Up
→b
Scroll Message Down
→space
(optional since the existing shortcut forspace
does the same thing AFAIK)- etc w/ your fav
less
shortcut keys
Now you can navigate your inbox w/ intuitive keys
