Prompted by: Metrics in KDE – Are they useful? – David Edmundson's Web Log
In my opinion, a lot of concern about telemetry in apps is overblown if the data shared is reasonable, anonymous, etc. From a privacy standpoint KDE’s opt-in telemetry is pretty reasonable, but I would imagine few people would naturally opt-in when given the choice and a default to off. Probably many of us are shell shocked from the days of spyware scanners and the fear of social media and Google selling data.
An idea I had would be to have in the Welcome Center wizard 2-3 examples of great improvements to KDE made possible from the collected data and a link to read more.
The idea is that people are more likely to opt-in if they feel like they are contributing and it means that developers will take their needs seriously.
