I had to reinstall Ubuntu 24.04 after a disk corruption. Having reinstalled Skrooge, I find it doesn’t open. Initially installed using Ubuntu App Center, I have uninstalled and then installed from the command line. Result the same in both cases: brief showing of the splash screen with plugins (and something else - it is too quick to read) mentioned, then it all simply disappears. Observing in System Monitor, the Skrooge process is visible briefly then simply disappears. That is what happens when I try to open as a program in its own right but the same happens if I try to open from a data file.
I can’t find any obvious log files that might help. Snap directory has a Skrooge directory in which there are three empty directories (41, common and current).
Can anyone suggest what I might do to get Skrooge running?
Hi - I don’t use Skrooge personally, but as far as getting possible troubleshooting leads goes, sometimes it can help to try to run a program from the terminal to see if it gives any helpful error messages there.
If you open the Terminal/Konsole and try to just run skrooge, do you get any error messages?
Thank you. That turned out to be very helpful, the clue I needed to get things working.
Trying it from the terminal resulted in a bit of output in the terminal (suggesting errors of some kind) but Skrooge opened. I wondered if it was worth rebooting the machine; after doing so I found two instances of Skrooge in the ‘Show Apps’ menu. Starting one resulted in the same behaviour described in my original post, the other opened Skrooge normally. I uninstalled Skrooge showing in the App Center; the one remaining is the one that worked.
Is it worth trying the terminal again and posting the output here for folk who know what they’re doing to see what’s happening?
Glad at least one method is working! What I’m guessing happened is that there must be some issue either with the Snap package of Skrooge itself, or with some way that it’s interacting with your device. If I recall correctly, the Ubuntu App Center only looks for Snap packages unless you manually search for .deb packages, so the Snap would have been suggested and installed when you set your system back up.
With the Skrooge Snap uninstalled from the App Center, now you have the Ubuntu repository .deb packaged version remaining, which must be functioning correctly. Unless you are running into issues, you might be fine as-is now!
If you do find that you need to update Skrooge for bug-fixes or newer features than what’s in the Ubuntu repository version (which tends to be pretty old, especially in Ubuntu LTS releases!), you might have better luck with the Flatpak version distributed on Flathub: Install Skrooge on Linux | Flathub
