[solved] Issue: Invisible Cursor, Shake-to-Find Cursor Works Briefly

solved: downgrading to kwin 6.2.0 solves the issue

Issue: Invisible Cursor, Shake-to-Find Cursor Works Briefly
I am experiencing an issue where my mouse cursor does not appear on the screen. However, when I use the “shake-to-find cursor” feature, the cursor briefly becomes visible but disappears as soon as I stop shaking it. The mouse functionality is otherwise normal, as both left and right mouse buttons work correctly.

Context:

This issue seems to have started after I updated a few Plasma-related packages. Additionally, I’ve noticed that the splash screen after logging in now lingers significantly longer than before (it used to be just a brief flash, now it stays on-screen longer before showing the desktop).

Logs:

When I searched the logs using journalctl for any mentions of “cursor”, I found multiple entries like the following:

sddm-helper-start-wayland[710]: "kwin_core: Failed to load cursor theme \"default\"\n"

System Information:

  • Operating System: Arch Linux
  • KDE Plasma Version: 6.2.1
  • KDE Frameworks Version: 6.7.0
  • Qt Version: 6.8.0
  • Kernel Version: 6.11.3-arch1-1 (64-bit)
  • Graphics Platform: Wayland
  • CPU: Intel® Core™ i5-11600KF (11th Gen), 12 cores @ 3.90GHz
  • RAM: 15.5 GiB
  • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Ti (PCIe/SSE2)
  • Manufacturer: ASUS

Do you have any suggestions for other steps I could try or specific logs I should check?

I experienced this as well. There was a very recent update to kwin (6.2.1.1-1) that ended up fixing it for me.
