Steam Deck Gwenview Videos do not play

SUMMARY
Videos used to play back when I first set up gwenview, many months ago. For a couple months now, Gwenview doesn’t play videos at all, just a black screen and no audio either (unlike other reports). The progress bar is visible but there is no video information on it.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE

  1. Open any video with Gwenview on steam deck
  2. Video does not play

SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
(available in the Info Center app, or by running kinfo in a terminal window)
Linux/KDE Plasma
(From my “about system”)
SteamOS 3.6.20
KDE Plasma Version: 5.27.10
KDE Frameworks Version: 5.115.0
Qt Version: 5.15.12

NOTE I see many bug reports of this nature fix the issue by installing some dependencies. while I have vlc and mpv installed, phonon and other backend packages I have been unable to locate on flathub.

Do you get any errors by running from terminal?

Try gwenview /path/to/video.mp4 and paste what you get

That’s the output from using a terminal (smh I should have tried that). Otherwise behaved the same.
