Tags appearing across platforms

Hi, I have been using Digikam for 3 years now and have tagged a lot of photos. The plan is to make these photos available to several users on an intranet via some kind of a photoview software. It is hard to find one that would support 3rd party tagging though. All galleries seem to have their own engines. Would you be able to offer solution for this? At the moment digikam tags seem to be only appearing on digikam. I hope I haven’t wasted years of my time tagging Terabytes of photos and videos that others won’t be able to view..
Please help

Hi @dechen,
digiKam writes tags to industry standard metadata locations in the image and/or the .xmp sidecar. Make sure you have tag writing turned on in the settings, otherwise digiKam will only store the tags in the digiKam DB.

Settings->Metadata->Behavior, and Settings->Metadata->Sidecars.

To write all the tag info to the images and/or sidecars, you can use the Maintenance tool. Maintenance->Sync Metadata and Database.

Cheers,
Mike

Hi, thanks, but the problem apparently lies not in the fact that digikam doesn’t tag the photos but in the fact that the photo libraries would not pick up on those tags. Would you be able to recommend a type of photo library that would support digikam tagging? The idea is for people to be able to access and download the library over intranet. Does Digikam itself offer a solution?

As michmill mentioned above:

digiKam writes tags to industry standard metadata locations in the image and/or the .xmp sidecar.

So if I add tags with digikam - my photo in File Explorer sees these tags in props.
Any other app that support usual tags should see them also.

So any other person can see my photo tags in usual way with any app.

At first check settings mentioned by michmill above.
Second make an experiment, tag some photo and check if photo in File Explorer props has them.
If yes - any person with any app will see them.
If no - recheck settings mentioned by michmill above and repeat untill it works.
