Telemetry settings: per app vs Unified

In plasma settings, there is a tab for “User Feedback” to adjust the amount of telemetry the user wants to share, but some KDE apps also have their own tab for it. Examples are Dolphin and Kate.
It seems like some of the information they share are duplicates (Qt version, operating system, etc.), but some are unique for the app. (network shares, dolphin settings, etc.)

I wonder if it would be a better user experience to combine all KDE telemetry into a single tab in plasma settings. Either as one toggle or a toggle for each app. This wouldn’t apply to non-plasma users.

Has this been suggested before?

hi, welcome.

It’s a good question.

a new user might assume the plasma settings are “global”, meaning they would override any individual app settings, so that if they turned off all telemetry in the plasma settings it would not matter what the settings in the individual apps were, they would not be able “phone home”.

i’m not sure that is the case.

i think if you choose to share all telemetry with kate or dolphin but have plasma set to none, it will still share the data from those apps (i’ve not tested this theory).

perhaps a unified settings page is not such a bad idea.
