The migration to kde linux

i have been hearing more and more about kde linux, i imagine that eventually we will have a official announcement about it, a iso for everybody and more details

i was wondering if there will ever be a direct upgrade to kde linux from kde neon?, my question comes form packages i saw being updated recently, one was about distro upgrade, since kde neon behaves like a rolling release distro i found that package a bit odd

not knowing if kde linux will come to us in 2026 or 2027, i was curios when i should back up my documents and start downloading the new iso or if it will be a upgrade path of some kind?

KDE neon and KDE Linux are two separate projects, so one is not an “upgrade”, it is more akin to something like moving from Fedora to Ubuntu, or any two entirely different platforms.

Migrating from one distro type to another is for the most part very difficult at best, and for all intents not usually feasible or possible.

Now, backing up and restoring one’s $HOME for desktop settings and data is something anyone can do on any distro, more so for Plasma based systems that are using the same or similar versions.

But migrating installed applications and services would be near impossible, since one uses deb files, and the other uses a system OS image + flatpak.

KDE neon is rolling, but only for Plasma and KDE things. The actual OS is still Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, and neon will see an upgrade to the new upcoming LTS (2604) some time later this year.

Probably what you saw is a standard part of Ubuntu’s upgrade tool, which does see updates even if it is isn’t going to be used right away.

thank you for your reply, that explains that update i saw, perhaps that answers my other question about kde, no news yet, possibly no direct update path? perhaps is for the best if it is that specific in this case
