I don’t know why, but after using Kdenlive for a while, the playhead moves outside the visible timeline.
The problem is resolved by restarting the Kdenlive program.
Is this caused by a setting change that I am unaware of, or is it a program bug?
Is there any other solution besides restarting the program?
Can you please provide a screenshot (or video clip) so I can know what you’re talking about?
It’s actually quite simple. When a video is played or keyboard shortcuts are used to move the playhead (Home, End, Ctrl+Home, Ctrl+End, Shift+Right, etc.), the playhead can end up in an invisible position.
Normally, when the playhead moves, the timeline should automatically scroll to keep it visible. This seems like a bug in Kdenlive’s timeline behavior.
Kdenlive: 25.04.2

System: Windows 11 Version 24H2
Kernel: winnt 10.0.26100
CPU: x86_64
GPU:
Movit (GPU): disabled

I’m on Windows 11, I can’t exactly replicate what you mean. It seems to work fine on my end.
I added a screen recording so that the problem I mentioned can be better understood.
Configure → timeline → autoscroll while playing ? Timeline — Kdenlive Manual 25.08 documentation
I used to get that just occasionally on older versions, even with autoscroll on, but I haven’t seen it on a recent version. I assumed it was a bug that’s been fixed, but maybe it’s still lurking somewhere?
In a quick test I ran to confirm that option really did behave like this, I kind of saw the opposite of that. I had to restart the app (without being prompted to) to get it to take effect, and even then it would somewhat intermittently return to the autoscrolling behaviour, and I never quite did figure out what was triggering it to flip flop between them.
So there does seems to be something a bit flakey about it - but I figured the first thing to check here was whether the OP had indeed accidentally fat-fingered the option off at some point, or whether something else was going on.
“Configure → timeline → autoscroll while playing” is already set
Is this project relatively large? Or can you put your finger on some action that triggers it?
I know I’ve seen cases with very large projects, once the UI starts to get unresponsive,
weird corruption starts to creep into the timeline behaviour, but it doesn’t corrupt the
project file and restarting will ‘fix’ it.
I haven’t seen what you’re seeing before - but given how erratic trying to disable that
option appeared to me, there seems to be something not getting passed around to
everywhere that it should, and possibly getting used uninitialised in a few places …
But either way, if you didn’t flip that option, this looks like a bug.
The project is not very large. As you can see in the video, the project duration is 1 minute and 9 seconds.
It is unclear when this problem occurs. It usually occurs after working on the project for a while.
This problem also existed in older versions.
The problem is resolved when I close and reopen the project or close and reopen the kdenlive program.
I think I found the cause of the problem. As shown in the video below, this problem occurs when an effect is added by double-clicking the merge line between two clips.
Ah good catch! That would be why I’ve never seen it, I don’t really use the same track transitions. That should make it reasonable easy to find.
It seems to be chaos season right now though, and probably nobody will be able to dig into this for at least another week or so, so could you please file a bug with the steps to reproduce it (preferably from a new project with just colour clips, or something similarly minimal).
We track bugs here: Components for kdenlive
but feel free to post back a link to your report here, for anyone later seeing this thread.
Thanks for digging into it!
I have exactly the same problem. There are 6 timelines (sequences) in my project. The automatic scrolling works for 5 of them, but not for one sequence. I have copied the content of this sequence into a new, empty sequence. The automatic scrolling works there.
That fits for me too. I use the merge option a fair bit on simple edits.
