This Week in Plasma: inhibit sleep while transferring files - KDE Blogs

Welcome to a new issue of “This Week in Plasma”! Every week we cover the highlights of what’s happening in the world of KDE Plasma and its associated apps like Discover, System Monitor, and more.

This is a companion discussion topic for the original entry at https://blogs.kde.org/2025/05/10/this-week-in-plasma-inhibit-sleep-while-transferring-files

The New Folder dialog update seems like an example of bringing in more personality and fun into the desktop, while presenting it in a crisp and professional way. Really nice!

Glad you like it!

Seems link 1 is incorrectly pointing at the notification horizontal scroll fix.

Inhibit sleep whilst transferring files is very welcome.

It seems instead of Frameworks 6.16 mentions, it should be 6.15.

6.14 was just released, the next KF version is 6.15.

It looks very good. Is there a context menu thing for choosing folder colour using the same framework?

I’m using a service menu, but sometimes it updates and sometimes it does not, and I’d rather not have to rely on 3rd party bodges.

The file/folder properties dialog allows choosing a folder icon. Click the current one to do so.

It is so pretty!

hi,

Thank you. The file “Properties” icon chooser is very good, however the choice is rather overwhelming, I like having the little menu of customisable colours that you get with a service menu. But often it does nothing. And I don’t trust the pling website at all. And I don’t enjoy editing .desktop files at all, they are awfully pernickety about formatting.

I also find the way the icon chooser scrolls to be violent and unpleasant.

Oops, fixed.

Fixed that too.

Man, I must have been tired when I posted this one.

This is off the topic, but I have a suggestion: could you, Nate, one day make a brief blog post about starting to help with translating KDE? Not with anything spectacular, just some fixes.

The existing way leads through an over-decade-old pages and dead e-mail addresses.

I’m afraid not. It’s not a topic I have any experience with myself.

Overhauled the technical infrastructure of how icons are drawn by Kirigami throughout Plasma and QtQuick-based KDE apps

Just to improve my understanding… is the plasma workspace considered QtQuick-based (as opposed to QtWidgets-based)?

Agreed! I really liked the look of that.

Yes it is; almost 100% of Plasma’s UI is written with QtQuick.

The translation process is a bit old, but there is an effort to modernize it (eg. moving from svn to git).
From what I see from the outside, every team also has a slightly different workflow. But afaik people there are helpful, so if you are stuck, just reach out for help.

Where did you find the dead email? Have you reached out so it can be replaced?
