This Week in Plasma: spoooooky ooooooooom notifications! - KDE Blogs

Welcome to the new home of "This Week in Plasma"! No longer is it a private personal thing on my (Nate Graham's) blog, but now it's a weekly series hosted here on KDE's infrastructure, open to anyone's participation and contribution! I'll remain the editor-in-chief for now, and welcome contributions via direct push to the relevant merge request on invent.kde.org. And after a post is published, if you find a typo or broken link, feel free to just fix it.

This is a companion discussion topic for the original entry at https://blogs.kde.org/2024/11/02/this-week-in-plasma-spoooooky-ooooooooom-notifications

I was wondering about adding symbolic versions of tray icons for a while because some of them really stand out, especially if using custom colors (Signal, Vesktop, OBS Studio etc.)

Great new home! Only one issue really; is there any chance we can have an RSS feed enabled, like there was on the previous location? Thanks!

Makes more sense to have it here, I agree! By the way, I really liked the “Other bug information of note”, with total nr fixed, high prio and 15 min bugs, any chance that is coming back?

@Kombatant, RFC 4287 - The Atom Syndication Format, right? Pure “RSS”'s XML is fairly unstandardised.

Anyway, maybe RSS/Atom feed for the discourse? - #2 by MasseR - Site Feedback - Haskell Community is of use, especially Enabling RSS feed on Discourse setup - #8 by codinghorror - Support - Discourse Meta.

There is an RSS feed for This week in Plasma it’s This Week in Plasma on KDE Blogs

And for This week in KDE Apps it’s This Week in KDE Apps on KDE Blogs

Congratulations on moving to the KDE infrastructure. But still missing the section with VHI bugs, 15 minutes and bugs of all types.

Also, the new article looks small, despite the big upgrade at the beginning. But hopefully more developers will now find out about the new way of writing TWIKs

Maybe we can have this mentioned somewhere in the post template? Like in or after the newsletter section, or up in the header.

Yes, that data will be returning next week.

What’s with the font rendering in the last two lines of the bottom notification? That’s one of the screenshots used in the article.

It’s 479891 – Some text glyphs in QML software are vertically mis-aligned or squished when using a fractional scale factor, which is a Qt issue that affects QML labels on scrollable views (like this one) when using fractional scale factors. It’s super annoying and dumb-looking, and apparently equally difficult to fix.

That oom notification is mint. I’m sure a lot of people will appreciate that addition, I certainly do.

Cheers Harald!

there is now a small tag at the top linking to the blog series and where to find the link to the RSS feed. I will need see if I find a nice way to add also a RSS icon next to that

Speaking of the new home for the blogs, it would be cool if there were html anchors for the text. For example, I’d like to link someone to the thing about symbolic icons.
Hope that’s a useful idea

@pallaswept, using Markdown headings on Discourse posts usually automatically adds those anchors. I presume that because these are originally in HTML form and automatically cross-posted, this doesn’t apply? I agree that it’d be useful, but perhaps this should be requested upstream, since I’ve had this problem on FAQ pages and the like on other Discourse instances too.

First of all, appreciate the fast response from everyone! Firefox addons can usually detect if a page has an RSS feed, but show nothing for the blog page. Hence my ask. And yes, a mention there would be super helpful as well. I bet there’s quite a few old geezers like me that still use RSS

Thanks for the new OOM Notifier, however I find the message not very helpful.
When I miss an application, I surely wouldn’t look for a notification from the “Linux Kernel”. (The user might not be on the seat when the app is closed.)
I would expect a notification, which includes the app name, like “%app has been closed due to memory shortage”
In the explanatory text, maybe the memory usage could be stated, like “%app used %GB of memory, which was more than the available free memory.”
Also maybe hint at a memory leak. Also maybe a link to kSystemMonitor to check memory usage.
