Welcome to a new issue of This Week in Plasma! Every week we cover the highlights of what’s happening in the world of KDE Plasma and its associated apps like Discover, System Monitor, and more.
Oh! Finally, PiP!
Would be better if hardware acceleration on Vivaldi worked to not force me to use Firefox, but anyway, good to see another “showstopper” being fixed, I think for me is the last one? Bad that it’ll tame another number of months to arrive, will Firefox will be alive until there? lol
Note that PiP is disabled by default both in KWin and Firefox (because it’s an experimental protocol), i.e. if you update FF, PiP won’t start magically working.
It would be nice if all Bluetooth devices would show their battery percentage in the Bluetooth widget as well as connected phones show it, currently when I plug in my DualSense or earbuds, I have to go to the power widget if I want to see the battery percentage. The power widget should be reserved for laptop battery and power profiles.
Using a non-default font or font size no longer causes the selection rectangles for files or folders on the desktop to be displayed at the wrong size and cause subtle layout and positioning glitches.
This one definitely isn’t a bug, and it’s not as clear that it’s desirable anyway. Changing this is probably possible, but it needs more discussion before starting.
In System Settings, moved the Invert and Zoom settings into the Accessibility page, which is a more sensible place for them than the Desktop Effects page was. (Oliver Beard, link 1, link 2, and link 3)
The Accessibility page is really coming together nicely - the effort to move things from Desktop Effects to easier-to-find locations seems to be paying off
Improved startup speed for System Monitor by loading the column configuration dialog’s content on-demand, rather than at launch. (David Edmundson, link)
Improved startup speed for System Monitor by loading the tree view indicator arrows on demand, rather than at launch. (David Edmundson, link)
I’m aware that I’m using a fast computer, but IMO it’s still impressive - only 1 second from pressing Super+Esc to a fully-loaded Overview page in System Monitor!
