Touch UI vanished in Feb 26 s/w update

Hi, recently installed KDE neon on a MS-Surface Go (v1) and used it as a tablet O/S very succesfully. Thanks everyone for creating a brilliant distro that Just Works on tablets! It is a rare and valuable thing.

Sadly a recent update (Feb 26) seems to have removed all the touch UI features, and now the tablet looks and feels like a desktop, needing a mouse and keyboard to be able to do anything useful. Screen rotation by accelerometer no longer works. Window decorations do not enlarge for easy finger-poking. The on-screenkeyboard is gone.

Please help! I miss the KDE touch UI tablet )-:

I use it on a touch device, but not with Neon, I didn’t have the same experience.

Do you use X or wayland session?

For the virtual keyboard on wayland the one that works best is maliit-keyboard. Just to point out there is also a little one, very simple, a simple python executable but really useful (it as modifier capacity): https://github.com/mdev588/vboard

Did you chek the configuration in Systemsettings > Workspace | General Behaviour you have Touch mode, and you can force it to be always enabled.
For rotation, some dependancy package are needed, maybe there was a problem in the upgrade. You can verify if it is installed, the package is iio-sensor-proxy

Note that I see (on another none touch device) that there is a big update to kde/plasma 6.3 so those major upgrade are prone to such problem (change in default settings for exemple) maybe it is due to that. I have the last plasma/kde normally on my touch device though.
What is your version of kde/plasma , you can have it in Systemsettings > System
| About this system
(on the botom)?

Hi alioth9, thanks for the quick response. It seems that the login session was switched to X11, not Wayland that I was using until now – I never used X11 on the tablet because it has poor support for touch UI, so it didn’t occur to me to look. I feel dumb!

The hint that revealed what had happened is that Maliit only runs in Wayland. After logging out, selecting Wayland and logging in again, the Maliit keyboard reappeared along with screen rotation, and enlarged window decorations when in tablet touch UI mode. Joy!

I have no hint why the login session reverted to X11, but now I know what to do if this happens again.

Happy to be useful
