Touchscreen issue

Hello, I’ve noticed that the right-hand touch area covering a quarter of my Dell XPS 15 9520 laptop screen is working very poorly – from the bottom to the top – or perhaps not at all? I’m running a KDE neon installation based on the latest Plasma 6.7.4 or 6.7.5 ISO.

Here is the information from the `kinfo` command:

Operating System: KDE neon User Edition

KDE Plasma Version: 6.7.5

KDE Frameworks Version: 6.30.0

Qt Version: 6.11.1

Kernel Version: 7.0.0-38-generic (64-bit)

Graphics Platform: Wayland

Processors: 20 × 12th Gen Intel® Core™ i9-12900HK

Memory: 32 Gio of RAM (31.0 Gio usable)

Graphics Processor 1: Intel® Iris® Xe Graphics

Graphics Processor 2: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 Ti Laptop GPU

I’ve tested with other resolutions in 16:10 only and also swapped the default GPU using the NVIDIA Settings tool, but there was no improvement.

Do you know why this is happening and how to resolve this issue? I have other touchscreen laptops that are smaller in size and have no problems.

Since changing resolution and GPU didn’t help, I’d first check whether that strip produces touch events outside Plasma’s configuration, rather than change more graphics settings. I haven’t tested this XPS myself.

The libinput documentation describes list-devices for finding the touchscreen and its event node, and debug-events for watching its input:

sudo libinput list-devices

Find the touchscreen entry and its Kernel: /dev/input/event... line. Then use that exact path below, replacing eventX:

sudo libinput debug-events --device /dev/input/eventX

Touch across a working part of the screen and then the right-hand strip. Does the strip still produce touch events, or does the output stop there? This uses libinput’s own defaults, not your desktop configuration, so the comparison could help narrow down where to investigate. No events there would not, by itself, prove a hardware fault.

Also, is an external display connected? If libinput isn’t available, just report that rather than changing drivers yet.

Hello, libinput is not installed on this computer, nor on the other smaller computers, which nevertheless work perfectly with touch input across all areas.

I suspect that this larger model is poorly calibrated. Does libinput allow for this, and if so, would I need to install it?

To clarify further, yesterday’s update to Plasma 6.8.0 did not resolve the issue on this model, contrary to what I had mistakenly assumed.

Why should I install libinput when this article explains that it is supported in Wayland and the system?

Rei_Kurosawa What do you think of my last two messages? I’d like to hear your opinion.

Install libinput and run the tests Rei listed. Rei gave you valid troubleshooting tips. Why are you resisting it? Just do it.
