Unable to login when using Wayland

I’ve been using Plasma with Wayland on Debian for ~3 weeks now, and today when I booted up my laptop I found that trying to login while using Wayland would result in both screens going black for a few seconds before it would kick me back to SDDM. Opening a terminal from SDDM and running startplasma-wayland returns:

Error: could not determine $DISPLAY.
Error: Can not connect kdeinit5!
org.kde.startup: “kdeinit5_shutdown” () exited with code 255
startplasma-wayland: Shutting down…
startplasmacompositor: Shutting down…
startplasmacompositor: Done.

I’m able to start X11 without any issue and while I did see another post on here that said deleting/renaming ~/config/plasma-org.kde.plasma.desktop-appletsrc would fix the issue, but doing that doesn’t help.

How do I fix this?

I’ve now learned that I’m able to use Wayland if I use a different user, but am unable to use Wayland with my primary user.

It sounds like some customization in your primary user account is conflicting. Do you have any custom environment variables or a custom PATH variable, or anything similarly low-level?

What/where exactly are custom environment variables or custom PATH variables? I haven’t directly messed with any configuration files related to customization and other than changing my wallpaper to a different image and later back to the old wallpaper, I haven’t messed with any customization for a while.
