Everytime I close all my documents or open Kate a new set of Untitled files appear. They then start polluting my quick menu.
Is there some way to at least get this menu to only show actual open files?

Hi - just to check, what version of Kate are you using? If it’s one from a Kubuntu distribution repository and not a Snap or Flatpak, then it’s likely to be an older one that doesn’t yet have the following work incorporated: fix session restore of tabs/views of untitled documents (!1578) · Merge requests · Utilities / Kate · GitLab
That change was in order to address bugs like 468573 – After restarting Kate, empty tabs appear "Untitled (2)", "Untitled (3)"... , which sound like the situation you’re running into. Could you check if you’re on the current (24.12.0) version of Kate?
I’m on Version 23.08.5
Is there anyway to get the newest version without having to update all of KDE or messing up the distribution release?
On Kubuntu, Snap or Flatpak (from Flathub) would be relatively easy ways to get the current upstream release
It happens to me as well with git master, JFYI.
