Kubuntu 25.10 has KDE 6.4. So far I’ve been pretty happy with the 6 monthly upgrade cycle, a nice balance between stability and being reasonably up to date.
Ubuntu is based on Debian Unstable thats why both has similar packaging releases.
by default it has flatpak incorporated in discover, and there is way for mentioned on their page if you need more applications. below is detail from KDE Community page
How can I install more specialized software not available in Discover?
As an “immutable base” operating system, KDE Linux does not include a traditional package manager that can modify the base OS. However, there are still multiple options for getting software not available in Discover:
-
Distrobox and Toolbox come pre-installed, and can install traditional packages from the Linux distro of your choice into containers in your home directory.
-
Homebrew can also be installed to provide traditional package management within your home directory.
-
You can compile software yourself, either into your home directory or on top of the base system using
systemd-sysext. -
AppImage apps downloaded from the internet work too.
There is too, Nix and Guix, more reliable than all those listed.
Thanks very much Vimlesh. That is quite helpful.
The immutable base however seems to suggest that this linux version is less customizable.
Since I have 2 desktops, can I install Arch with KDE 6.5 or later ?
What I mean is will Arch give the latest KDE version ?
At the time of typing, Plasma 6.5 is in the Arch Extra-Testing repo, which you would have to manually enable. Plasma 6.5 is expected to reach the Extra repo in the next few days, which would make it available to a new install (and all existing users).
UPDATE: Plasma 6.5 is now available in the Arch Linux Extra repo, so a new installation would have 6.5.
