Update Debian 13 Trixie KDE 6.3.6 to 6.4 or 6.5?

How can I update my KDE 6.3.6 (from Debian 13) to KDE 6.4 or even KDE 6.5 ?
Is this possible ?
If this is not possible, what other method can I use ?
Surely I could force this update somehow, if yes, how would I go about doing that ?

Thanks

first of all we got to mention the famous ‘DontBreakDebian’

Doing so, will break your Debian 13 instance (as 6.3.6 is the release that was tested by the Debian team.), If you are looking for an updated Plasma, you should go with a distribution that updates its repositories frequently, For example :

=> Debian Unstable or Sid
=> Tuxedo OS : Ubuntu LTS base, but with updated plasma repos.
=> Fedora (Which I use)
=> Arch Linux or one of its derivatives (CachyOS/EndeavorOS)

Thank you for your reply.

So that means, I cannot do it with this distro Debian (Stable). ?

You can use backports. That gives you updates from the testing releases. They are more like rolling releases (not completely), but still more stable, while still less stable than normal Trixie. But to be honest, if it is not just for a specific feature you need, you shouldn’t do this. It denies the whole benefit of using Debian. You choose maybe the wrong distro if you want to stay on newest software.

Don’t do it.

The major reason to use Debian is because you like the “we tested everything and it will remain exactly how it is for years” release model. If you find yourself preferring more up-to-date software, Debian is probably not the right distro for you.

I tried with Debian 13. Certainly, I’m no Linux guru and yeah, it ended up badly, I could no longer even login to a Plasma session. Luckily, I was just testing, so no harm was done.

What others said: this is not something you want to do under Debian, not what this distro is about (what Nate said above) and if you want newer Plasma then either switch to another distro (Kubuntu or even Debian Sid?) or wait until it becomes available in Debian.

When you pick Debian then you need to come to terms with the fact that newer packages come late to it. This is a tradeoff for stability as newer packages require testing.

Also, if he wanted an updated plasma (6.4) in Kubuntu, he should go for the interim release (25.10 in this case), But they are not the best for long-term use, because they serve as a testing ground for Ubuntu developers (with experimental features like implementing Rust tools), and the current LTS release (24.04) is still stuck on 5.27

It will cause A LOT of headaches and stability issues

KDE and KDE Discuss community are really great.

I was on MX Linux for a long time and before that straight Debian.

Debian community are very grumpy shall we say.

You guys are awesome.

Thanks again.

Based on the considered replies I have received , I will NOT be upgrading.

If you find yourself wanting a more cutting edge distro then I would recommend Fedora KDE. It’s a very good semi-rolling and stable distro with nice KDE integration and they also have a great community too, if that is important to you. You will even find they use the same forum software and many people from these KDE forums post regularly there.

+1 for Fedora KDE; it’s excellent.

Indeed, the KDE community is so helpful!

Something to consider. Besides my usual wm stuff, the kde….. de experience has been the very best, ever……on MX. I s..t you not. Zeeeee best, by far. Mind you, this partition is a flawless 5-ish. By lack of better words…..myeah, flawless. Truth to be told. Although I know “my way” and despite the fact that I have the most of respect, plasma 6-ish is kinda….reluctant still. But I have no doubt that once the MX guys do their stuff….that’s the one I’m getting.

I know that MX Linux has an Advanced Hardware System version which is usually kernel 6.14. I’m waiting for their version of Debian 13 + a.h.s. to ship.

KDE on MX Linux ? Never tried it.
When I was on MX Linux I stuck with XFCE because I had slower hardware.

When I got better PC, I went straight to Debian 13 Aug.9 this year.

I assume then that KDE on MX Linux would be Wayland then ?

And I would add that if you want stability, you can always stay on the latest Fedora -1, since Fedora support 2 releases, the last-1 is so deployed since 6 month and so every bug should be fixed and will still be updated for the next month until a new Fedora comes.

I’m not a fan of this idea because I update ASAP but have a friend with Nvidia drivers etc. that lived like this for years

Try KDE Linux, although it’s a alpha built but I am using it and it’s pretty usable for daily work. It’s mutable distro. But you get latest KDE Plasma 6.5.80 and KDE framwork 6.20.0.

Yes I heard about it. Interesting.

My question is though how do I get more software packages from a distro like this ?
I mean to say, debian packages would not work, right ?

Debian Unstable is mainly for developers and testers eager to aid the development of Debian next releases.

Its fairly stable, unlike its name meaning, as stable as Fedora or Arch, which is not much I reckon.

That said, give Unstable a chance before going to Fedora or Arch. haha
