There is a problem with the installation instructions on https://neon.kde.org/download. There’s only one suggested method in there for creating the bootable USB drive needed to test and install KDE Neon.
It suggests creating a USB drive with KDE ISO Image Writer. However, it doesn’t work! Not with the Linux version, at least. Yes, of course, it might work for you, but that’s because you’ve already marked the GPG signature owner as a trusted source. But for newcomers, it doesn’t work at all. Here’s what happens:
KDE ISO Image Writer will not let you create that USB bootable key. You then have to find other methods to verify the ISO and create the USB drive. Alone on your own. This is a serious bug. All the details are here:
This bug has been around for a very long time. It makes a very bad impression on newcomers, especially when they’re just starting out. Want to be more popular and make more money? You should start by fixing this problem…
While waiting for this bug to be fixed in the KDE ISO Image Writer, I think it would be very important to improve your installation instructions on the KDE neon download page.
You need to offer alternatives for verifying the ISO and creating the USB drive. And, while you’re at it, I suggest you supplement these instructions with other required steps, such as the possible need to access the BIOS to boot from the USB drive. See, for example, the instructions at Install Zorin OS - Zorin Help. Now those are clear, complete, bug-free instructions with a good design. It makes a big difference.
And don’t worry about me. I managed to install KDE Neon successfully on my own on last October. I love this KDE neon. But what bothers me is seeing you chasing after a few thousand dollars when I’m convinced you’re losing a lot of people and donations, just because the installation instructions are incomplete and the KDE ISO Image Writer app doesn’t work.
Could someone please take care of re-editing the KDE neon download page? It’s urgent, and I don’t have time for this right now.
