Using digiKam with a UGreen NAS

After a recent HDD failure (It was backed up) I purchased a UGreen DXP4800 NAS and set it up.
After a bit of a struggle I managed to mount the NAS on my Home Network using Mountain Duck. I can access and open my photo files from File Explorer (Win 10) but I have tried to create collections from the NAS in digikam but with very limited luck.
The connection to the Maria db works and sometimes digikam will show the collections and then next time when I run it it only shows the ALBUM header.

Digikam + Windows + Mountain Duck + UGreen + Maria db

I think the weak link in this is “Mountain Duck” as a quick look at its web page describes “smart synchronization” .. I believe this to be a can of worms, especially with large data base interactions that depend on accurate timestamps, etc.

Thanks eeyore

I don’t have mountain Duck set up for “smart synchronisation”. That is just an option, the other being “online”. Plus Mountain Duck was the only netDAV client of 4 I tried that mounted the NAS with a drive letter, that seems to work consistently.
However you may have hit the nail on the head with synchronisation issue.

After several more attempts, including, resetting my router, resetting my Firewall, re-installing digiKam and Maria Db the provisional conclusion I have come to is that refresh controls in digikam and the right click and refresh on the mouse button somehow disables the digikam interface. It may be something to do with Maria internal server database as refresh is something I have been using for years in digikam before I started using the NAS.

Anyone any thoughts on this?

If this is the case is it a bug or just something I have to put up with using a NAS?

It looks like my theory about refresh is wrong.
digikam has been running for about 3 hours on a new collection and has now frozen.

Maybe something is going to sleep while waiting for processing and Digikam is unable to keep it awake and/or awake it?

Also, Digikam is frozen, but, how about the system it is running on? Is it frozen or sleeping? Can you try to log into it from another system on your net? If you can log on, you might be able to obtain some additional symptoms, such as whether Digikam is frozen trying to do I/O or the system is out of memory, etc.

Also, what about the NAS, does it freeze also? Does the NAS have any power-saving features?

Anyway, I hesitate to suggest turning on various diagnostics until you’re sure about some of these components and have eliminated some of the possibilities.

Thanks eeyore.

I think you’re probable onto something.
When I opened my PC this morning and pressed the check for new items on digikam it started up again, catalogued another 500 or so DNG files, average size between 30 and 40+ Mb. It then froze again and is currently frozen.
As for the other things you mentioned.
Firefox is working, but slowly, as is Thunderbird.
The UGreen OS/App seems to working as normal.
Affinity Is working normally and I can load photos directly from the NAS but not via digikam, as I would normally.
Before I started this morning I set the NAS Deep Sleep setting to 3 hours.

After reading your post and digikam freezing I had a look at the Page File/Virtual Memory on my system and have done some re adjustment and I’ll see what happens.

Again, thanks for your help,

Alan
