I was using gnome for a long time when I tried Plasma 6, which I really liked. But one issue that really bothers me is that fractional scaling is messing up virtual machine resolution.
I have a 4k monitor and if I set scaling at 125% at the host, the virtual machine resolution on full screen is set to 6144x3456. If I set scaling back to 100%, then the virtual machine resolution on full screen is set to the expected 3840x2066.
Is there any work around this issue? I am about to reinstall my system and wanted to use KDE, but this is a problem that will prevent me from doing the switch. I frequentely use virtual machines, dont want to reset scaling every time I need to use it.
Using Fedora 40 with KDE 6.3.3. Problem continues when I use live image for Fedora 42.
I have a NVidia 2070 super, installed latest beta driver (575.51.02) and problem still persists.
Any help is greatly appreciated. If needed can open a bug too, but wanted to confirm is not some configuration problem.
Hi! I’m using Fedora KDE 42, also with fractional scaling and an NVIDIA card, and haven’t noticed issues with screen resolutions on virtual machines - I also use them almost daily for bug testing.
Which virtual machine management program are you using? I’m using Virtual Machine Manager (virt-manager) on top of QEMU/KVM, if that might make a difference?
Hi! Thank you for answering. I am using virt-manager too, with auto resize vm with window set.
Tried using display port instead of HDMI but the result is the same. At this point, not sure what else I can test (maybe will try other distro). If there are other people having the same problem please add a comment.
Looking at the issues reported for virt-manager, it’s likely an inherent issue with trying to use that software with fractional scaling: gnome wayland with fractional scaling gives incorrect VM graphical console size · Issue #524 · virt-manager/virt-manager · GitHub
There are some workaround ideas listed there - for what it’s worth, I don’t see any issue with the “Auto resize VM with window” option disabled, so maybe that would help?

Thank you for the link. I didn´t find it on my searches. I tried other distributions like Arch and the problem was the same. I decided to install Fedora 42 with KDE since it works without “auto resize VM with window”. I still hope they fix this in the future since the option is good when we resize the window to fit other windows.
I am enjoying the experience with KDE, although finding some problems here and there. But I believe it is expected due to the number of features that KDE provides.
Thank you for the help!
