Wake on LAN support

Loving KDEconnect so far… It would be super slick if there was a wake on LAN option when the app says “This paired device is not reachable”

Instead of using a seperate app.

hi, welcome.

yes, that would seem to be the big missing piece for KDEconnect since it would be infinitely more useful to able to send something to my PC from my phone or my tablet when the PC desktop was locked (either screen lock, sleep or hibernate)

i’m speculating, but there are probably a raft of security concerns around that capability that are either intractable or too compromising… or perhaps they just haven’t gotten to it yet.

There is nothing compromising about WoL. If you don’t want it on target device, you disable it. It’s been standard functionality since ages.

so having the firmware constantly polling the network for a “wake up” call is not a security vulnerability?

does is use more energy than disabling it?

Not sure about the energy it uses, it is probably negligible since any device sleeping uses some energy anyway (standby mode).

I am not an expert on WoL, so Wikipedia will provide more info on its inner workings: Wake-on-LAN - Wikipedia

But there is no security vulnerability, admins can always disable it in BIOS/UEFI. The worst thing it does is it wakes up a computer from sleep.

thanks, that’s good to know.

but it would seem KDEconnect would need to do more that just wake the PC, it would also need to log in, so there’s that bit.
