White snow appears on the edge of one of my screens with Wayland. Hence I still use X11. I tested Wayland just the other day. Any ideas why? Any others have the same issue?
I hope the X11 support remains for a long time because Wayland code quality and compatibility still isn’t as good.
Forgot to mention the times I’ve tried to tough it out with Wayland I’ve had to do fsck to get the computer to boot after a while. Could be the compatibility with older hardware is the issue. Anyway, I am using X11 without issues.
I use KDE Neon 6.0 with the latest updates. Integrated Intel graphics on a Broadwell CPU. 2 screens. The white snow was on the left side of my browser window on the right, secondary monitor. Very narrow column. Can’t add more detail as I’m using X11 right now. I try Wayland periodically to see if that issue is resolved.
Interestingly, when KDE Neon 6.0 first was released and I was using Wayland for the first time, the system locked up / crashed so frequently I found it unbelievable. Somehow the developers fixed that in about 2 weeks and now the Wayland experience is pretty stable on my hardware except for some quirks, such as the issue I posted about here.
I’m content continuing to use X11 since it works fine.
Those issues had nothing to with Wayland, but were rather about not well executed upgrade by Neon.
Other distros were not concerned with those issues (or a lot less so).
I am in Wayland now. The “snow” is about 1 pixel wide for 3/4 of the very edge of my secondary monitor on the left. It dances, meaning it flickers. Quite annoying if I pay attention to it. Therefore, I am going back to X11 yet again.
Could be my old hardware that Wayland hasn’t been properly tested for. Broadwell CPU with integrated Intel graphics. You can make fun of this old machine, but the fact is it works perfectly well for my needs, and I have no issues using X11.
Turns out the issue causing the snowy dancing of a small number of pixels on the left edge of my primary screen (the one without the task manager) was because my scaling % was set too high. Currently have it down to 105%, and don’t have the issue (Wayland). I get the issue if I raise it too high.
Noticed this since I did a fresh install of KDE Neon, using Wayland (default), and didn’t notice the issue until I increased the scaling % using Display Configuration.
Also, I tried out the latest Ubuntu. Really liked it just that I am used to KDE Neon and more comfortable in this environment. One thing I liked about it were two accessibility features that instantly made the OS especially easy on my eyes: Large Text and High Contrast.
