Wayland not so efficient?

I tested Haruna on X11 and on Wayland with these results for the same video (TearsOfSteelFull12min_720p_24fps_h265.mkv) 720p, with vaapi decoder on Intel Tigerlake:

CPU occupation

X11:

Haruna 9-10%

kwin_x11 3-4%

Xorg 2-2,7%

Total: 14-16,7%

Wayland:

Haruna 11-12%
kwin_wayland: 7-8%

Total: 18-20%

It does not seem like a big difference when put like that, but in relative terms it is not so small either: Wayland consumes 20 per cent more than X11.

Do you have other experiences one way or the other?

kwin mostly sits at 0.0% for me, so that looks pretty high…

I grabbed the 1080p version, and I’m seeing

X11

  • kwin goes from 0.1 - 0.3%
  • MPV is showing around 1.3-1.4% right now.
  • Haruna shows 1.5 to 2.1% - also seems to do more read/writes which is interesting.

Wayland

  • kwin pretty stable at 0.1-0.3% (mostly 0.1%)
  • MPV showing 0.5% (2.2% if I scrub the timeline)
  • Haruna 1.1% -2.8% if I drag the slider (it doesn’t ‘scrub’ like mpv) - again, showing more frequent download activity

This on a Ryzen 5600G, and I’m on X11 because mouse gestures don’t work with Wayland.

Same story with Tom Jones:

Can you try with ‘top’ ?

Enough of the logging in and out for today, switching to Wayland is almost as painful as switching to Windows - my gestures stop working and makes it less convenient for me to do anything.

You are rather vague with your descriptions though… you should try:
