What is a .raw file and can I make a bootable USB key of it without KDE image writer?

I am having difficulty installing KDE Image Writer on Neon. Is it really necessary? Can’t I use dd to write the image file? In which case, what’s the relation between the .raw file and an .iso file?

See this:

In ISO file is a disk image file type that creates an optical disk, or acts like one on a USB stick. A raw file is a straight disk image. The extension name itself is not necessarily important.

IIRC, you need something like an ISO style in order to boot on a non-EFI system., or something along those lines. (and I may be misunderstanding things)

Yes, you can use DD, or you can use a tool that supports these.

I created a bootable USB stick with KDE Linux’ .raw image just like I use to do with .iso: with a program to create bootable devices, I think the one from KDE or Fedora
