When screen dims, the monitor never undims completely

Hey y’all!

I wanted to share this here before submitting a bug report, because I’m not sure if it’s due to KDE, or a problem with my hardware. This makes it even more difficult since I can’t give any extra steps for recreation other than “wait for monitor to dim. activate monitor. screen is still dimmed.” I have a strong hunch its due to KDE.

This was a problem that I just dealt with for a little over a year now, and I’m just sick of it.

Here’s the gist of the issue. Whenever KDE dims due to inactivity, it never restores my monitor back to full brightness. My monitor could be at 100% brightness, then gets dimmed to like 12% due to inactivity, and then only goes back to something like 20% when activity happens again. I’m sorry for the ballpark percentages, but these numbers seem to change from every now and then.

To restore my monitors back to full brightness, I have to press the analogue buttons on my monitors to go to my hardware settings for my monitors and reset the brightness each time.

For example, as I am writing this, my monitor is at 12% brightness because I haven’t bothered resetting my brightness after KDE dimmed it again about 30 minutes ago.

Sorry if this is not the full amount of information, this is my first ever post here. I would be happy to provide any diagnostic information to find the root of the problem.

Did you submit a bug report?

I am seeing the same behavior on two machines, both running Fedora 42 with KDE Plasma Version 6.3.5 and KDE Frameworks 6.14.0.

This hasn’t happened on other machines. I wonder if it may be related to the type of monitor connected.

Hi - for what it’s worth, it does look like a couple bug reports have been filed over the past year or so, describing what seem to be similar issues to this one:

One of those seemed to have resolved itself for the reporter, but the older one is still pending confirmation.

Interesting. Ever since installing Fedora 42, my monitor dims after the timeout specified in Settings > Power Management > Display & Brightness > Dim automatically. This happens when I am actively typing on the machine, which is not what I expect. The only way I have found to make the monitor return to normal brightness is to manually change the brightness level using the control in the system tray.

This is similar to the poster above although a little different since my system is not idle. It does not seem the same as either of the bug reports.
