Those are not indexed by baloo.
You should be able to search by filename still.
“Those are not indexed by baloo.”
baloo is indexing the /home/user tree now and shows 73% - up from 71% yesterday. I had ticked off “File names and content” in Plasma’s “File search”.
I will try to open a bug report, but it’s not clear to me which files I could submit.
Meanwhile I’ll test more directories under /home/user.
The interesting ones are the one baloo takes very long indexing.
If the blocker is IO or a high number of files, that’s expected to be somewhat slow.
Baloo continues to draw criticism, I met this issue some years ago but it has given me no trouble for a long time now.
KDE settings (easy selections via radio buttons) do tend to invite a number of PEBCAK issues also.
I now have
/mnt/T3
hard drive (Media server)/mnt/T4
(Media and 10,000 e-books),/mnt/W2
Movies (Guess…) with file names and contents selected.
balooctl6 status
Baloo File Indexer is running
Indexer state: Idle
Total files indexed: 16,083
Files waiting for content indexing: 0
Files failed to index: 0
Current size of index is 1.23 GiB
I have a 1.2 GiB index (~/.local/share/baloo) updated 8 minutes ago.
The main issue for me was when I decided to include hidden files - that’s a real killer and a rather stupid error given the HUGE numbers of files in cached/Plex and other hidden folders with mostly useless results.
To be specific, I think there were well over a million files included when hidden folders are uncovered…
We have very good threads and troubleshooting guides in the Manjaro forum across the years.
Anyways @Bjarnulv if you wanna troubleshoot this, you should start a fresh thread and we’ll play with it.
Total files indexed: 438 659
This does seem rather excessive maybe - i don’t know - but it looks quite massive.
Also, take a look here:
https://community.kde.org/Baloo
Understood; I’m just trying to relate what I see.
I have looked closer at the 21 directories under /home/user - the search function fails in all dirs except three:
anaconda3 (created by Anaconda)
aur (created by myself)
Calibre-bibliotek (created by/within Calibre).
Interestingly, when starting a search from /home/user, it finds files, although not all, throughout the /home/user tree.
I have been using nothing but Arch+KDE on my main machine since 2008…
I got aware of this search problem in Dolphin about 6 months ago, but did nothing due to laziness. Yes, it is a big number of files - mostly news articles in PDF. I am waiting for a PCI S-ATA card before shifting them to a mechanical disk - and another for backup
I am still not sure if it is a KDE bug or just a quirk in my system setup.
I had a look at bug-id=3988 (full link not allowed here).
It looks very similar to what I experience.
So i did:
$ balooctl6 purge
logged out
$ balooctl6 index /home/user/
(which was very fast)
and now it looks like the search function in Dolphin is fully restored (with “File name” and “From here”). Of course, I have tested it only a few times, but it looks promising…
