I wasn’t accusing YOU in particular of “fanboi bickering”, I’m sorry if it came out that way. It was a general comment as I had this experience in nearly all other threads and forums. Any NVIDIA related thread always gets derailed into pointless bickering and that is massively counterproductive, it achieves nothing. It really discourages me from asking for help on Linux forums and leaves a bad taste.
And speaking of snaps, it’s not just Firefox, Ubuntu aggressively pushes you to install snaps for everything pretty much. It’s too much PITA to deal with snaps.
Right now Fedora is looking good. Except for one game that requires Ubuntu or its derivatives, it’s about some dependency not being available in Fedora. Maybe I can figure this out eventually.
I just disabled the damn things as you already mentioned along with the ads and all their other garbage they do like the support ads for the supposed security fixes. Yes and all the bickering on the nvidia does get a little old, like the systemd garbage, wayland/x11, emacs/vim … It is a wonder anything gets done on Linux development with all that I have seen going on over the decades I have used it, May next year is 25 years for me.
Oh wow! 25 years. I tinkered with Linux since it came out pretty much, but just on and off and I never used it is my main desktop.
BTW, the AMD vs NVIDIA wars are extremely common on the Windows side too, especially on gaming forums, it can get really nasty. But I swear it’s the AMD users that usually start them accusing NVIDIA owners of being sheep and corporate shills. I don’t understand that as AMD is just another big corpo that wants your money and they’re not some kind of saints either. They had their share if shenanigans just like Intel and NVIDA. Anyway…
People…
Oh yeah it has been a while what got me started on it was Microsoft and their garbage. Did an “upgrade” to Win 98/SE it borked my top of the line Awe64 Sound Blaster card. Nothing but a midi file would play after that. Downgrade to 98 nope no change, same with Win 95a/b &c. Never tried going back to the WFW 3.11. Anyways I am in the computer store to buy new card and seen this Redhat thing I had been reading about for ages dirt cheap like under $10 so I said what the hell cheaper than new card I will give that a try. Installed and a simple sndconfig later putting in my IRQ and DMA setting and I had working sound and that was my last day using windows for my computers on regular basis. Now I have made boat load of money fixing that trash for other people over the years, but that is the extent of my involvement with it since May of 1999, same month I got my first broadband connection a whopping 300k/s a full 100x increase over the damn modems 3k/s I had until then. Ahh memories of fun times… You have a good one hopefully you get it all sorted.
Thanks redgreen925, you’d probably hate the MS of today even more.
Mehus, yeah, I think I saw that but some people commented that even that will result in some Frankenstein OS and may lead to problems in the future. Besides, getting rid of snaps is only one problem
But yeah, I might look into that. Thanks!
