Window title bar disappeared

Hi All,

I encountered window title bars disappearing sometimes after login to my account. The issue does not always happen, but it is quite often. I tried to open several different applications, but the window title bars for all of them disappeared.

it’s called the title bar

are you using a theme other than the default theme?

Thanks for clarifying the term.

I’m using a theme called “Ubuntu Studio Dark”, which is a default theme for Ubuntu Studio.

click on the desktop and type “title”, then go to the settings page shown in the search result

what theme is that showing?

if you switch that to breeze do the title bars come back?

i see on all my windows that if i right click on the title bar and choose more actions there is a check box for “no title bar and frame”

but now i’m afraid to check that box because i don’t know how i would get them back.

Could you please clarify where “the desktop” is?

The context-sensitive menu of title bars does not have the action you said, but there is an action called “No Border” as shown below. After turning it on, the title bar disappears. I can still turn it off by using ALT+F3 to show the context-sensitive menu and deselect the action.
no_border

However, the “No Border” action only affects the associated window. In my case, the title bars disappeared for all the windows I opened.

by that i mean literally click on the background image of the desktop (so that no window has focus, but rather the desktop does) and start typing.

this will bring up krunner which is a powerful search tool you can use to find all sorts of things

for instance you can type “about” and under the system setting result you can copy to the clipboard all the relevant facts about your plasma install, like this

Operating System: Kubuntu 22.04
KDE Plasma Version: 5.27.9
KDE Frameworks Version: 5.104.0
Qt Version: 5.15.3
Kernel Version: 6.2.0-36-generic (64-bit)
Graphics Platform: X11

which is often helpful for ppl to know

maybe because you are using an older version of plasma, you don’t have the same menu as me… mine says “No title bar and frame” and since i got to that menu from the title bar, it’s not clear how to get it back.

It’s “Breeze”.

My system info is as follows:
Operating System: Ubuntu Studio 22.04
KDE Plasma Version: 5.24.7
KDE Frameworks Version: 5.92.0
Qt Version: 5.15.3
Kernel Version: 5.15.0-88-lowlatency (64-bit)
Graphics Platform: X11

those are some older packages and kernel

im wondering if enabling backports wouldn’t help your situation.

and so where did you install KDE from?

it could just be that you missed a dependency somehow.

what does dpkg --audit give you?

I didn’t install KDE directly. It was installed with Ubuntu Studio Installer.

It returns nothing.

upgrading my plasma via backports on kubuntu was a noticeable improvement and was worth doing imho.

your studio version offers the same upgrade path

Thank you for your help. I will keep monitoring the issue.

To get Plasma 5.27.x for Ubuntu Studio 22.04 LTS you will also have to enable the Kubuntu Backports Extra PPA additionally to the Kubuntu Backports PPA, see:
KDE Plasma 5.27.9 available in Kubuntu Backports Extra

I can’t include one link here…

Search “How can I reset Okular to show the title bar and menu again? [duplicate]” and you will get the answer by Adalbert Hanßen. That works for me.

Ctrl+Shift+F works for me.
