window too big on repo and flatpak, but fonts look bad on appimage

(using debian 12) hi, i’ve installed kdenlive through the apt repo, flatpak and appimage but i have different issues for them. the flatpak and repo issue makes it unusable - the size of certain windows such as project settings are comically wide, spanning bigger than both of my monitors, and can’t be resized. the appimage doesn’t have this issue, but instead all the text is rendered strangely. here’s how it looks

does anyone have an idea how i could fix either of these issues? thanks

Hi, and welcome to the forum and community.

Your screenshot looks like you are running Kdenlive as a Windows app. Is that true? Or do you use a DE theme on Debian that looks like Windows?

yes, i’m using a custom windows 95 theme

Why?

Nvm, let’s move on to the next questions. Are you using Wayland or X11? What theme in Kdenlive have you selected?

X11, and it’s regardless of kdenlive theme (also desktop themes are used for personalization)

Any special sizing turned on for your monitor(s)?

I’m coming to the end of my troubleshooting list, though …

My Dollar goes on your window manager and/or your custom theme for it. What WM are you using?

using xfwm4, happens regardless of theme

alright i switched from xfce to plasma, the window is still too big and can’t be resized on the repo and flatpak but the fonts look better on the appimage now. ty for the suggestions though

The repo versions (in almost all distros) have historically been trouble, they don’t always track all the moving parts involved in each new upstream binary release well - and the Debian Bookworm version specifically is also nearly 3 years old now and a lot has been fixed and improved since then. Even the version included with Trixie (which is due to officially end freeze and release in a couple of days) is already 3 major release versions behind the (many) fixes that have landed

I’m not sure what you mean by “can’t be resized”, or why the flatpak isn’t playing nice - but the AppImage is generally the least troublesome and where all fixes get tested first.

With plasma you should even be able to explicitly specify the size and position that you want kdenlive windows to initially open in - but they should always be explicitly resizeable.

even specifying the size of the window doesn’t change it, it still goes on for miles.

but either way i have another similar problem now i didn’t realize before when i was just trying to get the program to work. in the flatpak and appimage versions, the bottom half of the editing window (audio mixer, effect stack tabs, etc. tabs) takes up more than half the window and that can’t be shrunk either. when on the repo, it’s the project monitor taking up too much space that can’t be shrunk.
