Windows APP update

Hi, I am running KMyMoney 5.2.1-0683f36

I want to update it because I have some visualization bugs. For example this:

Can you help me to update Kmymoney please?

Thank you

What do you need help with? You can find the installer starting from here: Download | KMyMoney

I would like to update the application to see if this bug gets fixed. But is there a specific procedure to update it without losing any data? Can you please help me?

Second question: Then I made a mistake: I added a bank account two years ago, but it’s actually an investment account. I would like to create the correct investment account and move the transactions from the bank account to this new investment account. How can I do that? I don’t want to lose all the transactions recorded on that account. Thank you.

Software and data are distinct and stored separately. You can install, uninstall the software, your data is not affected. To know where your financial data is stored, open KMyMoney, in the top menu, select “File → open recent” and there you will see the path where your .kmy file is stored, which contains the financial data.

in the ledger of your source account, select all relevant transactions, then right-click and select “move transaction to” in the menu, then select the target account.

Thank you for your reply, you’ve been very kind. As for the second question, I know how to move a transaction, but the issue I have is different. I need to handle transactions entered in a current‑account style within a new investment account. I don’t know how to make the transition without losing the information saved over time. I understand that a current account is different from an investment account in KMyMoney.

Most likely this is a manual process. Unfortunately, there is no feature to make that happen other than entering the information in the new investment account transaction by transaction and delete the corresponding ones in the asset account. I understand that this may become a very tedious work.

Thank you I have updated Kmymoney.

Is there a difference to save the .kmy from the kmymoney folder and make “backup” from menu?

What do you mean by “current-account style?” What information are you afraid of losing?
Moving transactions between accounts is limited to accounts of the same type. Assuming your original account is a checking (or other asset) account, you cannot move transactions to an Investment Account. However, you can use the old checking account (possibly even renaming it) as the Brokerage Account for the new Investment Account.

Thank you, very kind. I don’t understand how to add bonds and stocks to the investment account. I’m reading some guides, but I can’t figure it out.

Unfortunately, it does seem that something has changed recently, requiring extra steps not listed in the Handbook. I’ll try to write up a quick summary in the next day or two.

Would it be possible to export the data from the checcking account (i.e. current account), massage it with an editor in some way, and then import it into the investment account?

Possible, but it would probably take some serious scripting. Some transactions might need to go the new new Investment Account and some to the new Brokerage Account. The main question I have is how true investment transactions were entered in the original account. (The current/new problem is that a security transaction cannot be created (manually or by import) until the security already exists in the Investment Account. Until recently, you could create the security as part of creating/importing the transaction.

Thank you, you are very kind. When you have time, could you also respond to my previous question?

“Is there a difference to save the .kmy from the kmymoney folder and make “backup” from menu?”
I ask this because if I change my PC I want to be ready

Thank you!

I “manually” back up my *.kmy file to an external drive. That works very well and has never given me problems. I have never used the “menu” method, but I would be surprised if the result were any different. A

Ok I managed to add stocks and bonds. I entered the current values, but I don’t understand why in the summary—where the “investments” account appears—it doesn’t show me the current value of the stocks.

Which summary? Every summary of an investment account for me does show the total current value of the stocks. Perhaps a screen shot would help, if not a more detailed description of which view/screen your are looking at.

Did you click on Tools → Update Stock and CurrencyPrices ? Do you have the correct quote source from Settings → Configure KMyMoney → Onlne Quotes ?

But the automatic update doesn’t work, or am I wrong? This box can’t be selected

You probably can’t select Finance::Quote because it probably is not installed. (It’s a Perl module, which needs to be installed outside of KMyMoney, and I would only suggest using it if you have some particular reason.) Use the dropdown right below that to select a source for online quotes.

Can you please help me install it? thank you
