Yikes! KDE Neon 6.2 not booting

hi all,
Does anybody have any idea why my Dell XPS just refuses to boot with KDE Neon 6.2 ?

Hi, I have also a Dell XPS (9520) and while updating to KDE Neon 6.2 (with Ubuntu 24.04.1 LTS) the system was falling in black screen after selecting neon on the grub menu.

Is not clear why this happens, but the fix is easy, edit /etc/default/grub and remove “splash” from the GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT line. In order to do so you can access a root terminal from the grub advanced menu or also boot from a recovery kernel which in my case booted the system with nomodeset.

I had the same issue yesterday on a self-built computer.
Here, somehow grub made a new entry in the BIOS which was not selected to boot. Check if you find multiple “KDE Neon” or similarly labelled entries in the boot picker of your BIOS. Or look out for multiple entries for the same disk.
Maybe this is also the solution for you

Thanks.

My booting error shows up at the Dell Secure Bios screen. I don’t get to the Grub menu-- unfortunately, the boot sequence halts before that

Quick update:
So, I’m appreciative of the KDE Neon developers for pushing out new User Edition ISO’s… but my machine is still not there yet.

What I’ve seen so far, in summary:

• 20241013 Upgrade from KDE Neon 6.1- this probably would have worked, except I think I was receiving the black screen error, didn’t know what to do, and decided my best choice would be to move ahead with a full reinstall

• 20241013 Full reinstall - seems to have messed up my Grub menu / boot options. The install process with calamares seemed fine, but booting to the new OS never worked. Note, I checked pgp signature was ok.

• 20241017 Full install - the live session from this image would not boot on my laptop. Pgp sig checked and passed.

• 20241020 Full install - For this attempt, I used a brand new a USB flash disk, and I again checked the PGP sig. The image booted the live session, but I got drive reformatting errors, and the calamares error shown below. :man_shrugging:

Does anybody know if developers are discussing/ reporting on their progress? I could potentially continue trying new KDE Neon images if they think the issues are largely understood and they’re getting close on resolving the issues. On the other hand, I might need to switch over to another distro if it remains a mystery for the devs.

Thank you

Update #2:
• 20240814 - This image, still based on jammy, restored functionality on my system. I would still look forward to the eventual upgrade to 24.04 LTS.
