After Manjaro Linux update: Mono audio is only played back in the left channel

Hello,
in Kdenlive 24.05.2 a mono audio is only played in the left channel. This was not the case before.
Is this a bug or do you have to adjust something so that 1-channel audio is played back normally in the left and right stereo channel as normal mono?

I just realized that it’s not a Kdenlive problem, but that it was definitely caused by a Manjaro update.
I don’t know anything else yet.

edit:

It is the latest updates from Manjaro that are causing the problems. I am not allowed to install this one yet, then everything will be fine with Kdenlive.
ffmpeg
ffmpeg4.4
lipblacebo
mlt
mpv
x265

Latest finding:
The problem is only caused by mbedtls2. When I do the upcoming updates,
ffmpeg
ffmpeg4.4
libplacebo
mlt
mpv
x265
mbedtls2 is also installed, then mono is only played on the left. The problem is also with older Kdenlive versions and not only with the latest one.

The sister project Shotcut has exactly the same problems. Which isn’t surprising, probably because both are based on MLT.

Hello @berndmj
Is it different on your system? Can Kdenlive play back 1-channel audio correctly, as before, in stereo on both sides?
Is this a fault of Kdenlive (and Shotcut), a setting issue or is it correct?
The interesting thing is that my media player and Audacity have no problems.

Send me a file that doesn’t work for you and I can test on my system …

Here are two 1-channel files, made with Audacity:

I’m very curious to see whether they are reproduced normally on the left and right channels.

No issues whatsoever: both files are played “centered” when using Kdenlive and the media player. I am using Pop!_OS 22.04 LTS

Hello Bernd,
good to know that it’s not a real Kdenlive problem.
Here is the screenshot of Manjaro with updates.

At the moment I’m not sure what to do next. Just wait until another update solves the problems?

Short of switching distro, this is probably the best choice

Hallo Bernd,
You’re funny: change distro. But why not?
Do you know Manjaro? Do you think Pop! would be better? And, by the way: Is Kde Plasmal better for Kdenlive than my Xfce?

Have a look at which versions you have on your Pop!:
ffmpeg version 2:7.0.1-2
ffmpeg4.4 version 4.4.4-6
mbedtls2 version 2.28.8-3

I have done a fair bit of distro hopping which included Manjaro, and I finally settled for Pop!_OS. The default DE is Gnome but I could have installed KDE Plasma or Xfce, I guess. The next DE for Pop!_OS is Cosmic which looks very promising. I am very happy with this distro, its stability and performance. At one point I used Ubuntu Studio, KDE Neon, and Mint (Cinnamon), but came back to Pop!_OS.

ffmpeg shows version 4.4.2, and there is no mbedtls. Most likely due to the fact that Pop!_OS is based on Ubuntu, while Manjaro is based on Arch.

I don’t think this thread (and forum) should start the old philosophical debate about which distro and DE is better. I like that the many Linux flavors and DEs give people choice (albeit too much choice!) to use the best tool(s) for what they need to do - if you only have a hammer everything looks like a nail.

Hallo Bernd,
However, it is probably mainly a Kdenlive problem, because with the Flatpak versions the problem only occurs later than Kdenlive 24.02.2. Since an update from 2024-06-08 the problem is there again.

I think it is a problem of the combination of flatpak and Manjaro (Arch). I am using flatpak (besides appimage, of course) and do not have these issues.

No problems with all AppImages!

Hey micha,

if you suspect a dependency is causing your issue (like you suspect with mbedtls2) you can downgrade that specific package. Please consult your distro how to do it and if it is safe.

As for appimage and flatpak. As both of those provide their own runtime the issue could still be the dependency.

PS: Plasma is not better for Kdenlive, its just better in general! Just kidding, use whatever you like

Hello @Duha
I have just downgraded from mbedtls2 2.28.8 to 2.28.3, the oldest version: No improvement. But it was worth a try.

I also found this same problem while using the flatpak version of kdenlive 24.05.2.

This was occuring with 2 sound effects, both of them were .wav files.

I’m using Linux Mint LMDE. I also fixed it by using the appimage 24.05.2.

Latest status: Almost all mono or 1-channel audio files (ac3, flac, m4a, mp2, mp3 and ogg) behave normally, i.e. they are played back as files in Kdenlive in both channels.

Only wav files cause problems in that they are only played back in the left channel. This is the case with wav files from Audacity and Ocenaudio.

When I render a mono audio file as wav with Kdenlive, it also behaves normally: audio is played back left and right.

Maybe it’s “just” Audacity and Ocenaudio problem - strange.
I will look for a standardized wav in mono and try that.

edit:
The problem also occurs with many (all?) wav files from the Internet. It is probably not really due to Audacity.

Hallo Bernd,
It is a bug, at least with Shotcut, and this will be corrected in the next version. Do we still have to initiate something at Kdenlive, or will this error also be corrected here?
