Can't create KDE-Linux installation USB drive

Hi All,

I just heard about kde-linux so thought I’d give it a shot. I downloaded the raw image and the iso image writer, but when I tried to write the image to a usb stick I got this error message.

I tried my other usb image writer (in Mint) but it wouldn’t recognise the .raw file. (I’m assuming I can’t just rename it…) I also tried downloading it again, but same result.

What am I missing?

:-\

That tool is picky.

I got that error, but it was because I forgot the USB stick was still mounted in Dolphin, so make sure it isn’t being mounted automatically when you insert the USB drive.

Hi,

For my needed iso images I use for years Ventoy, no issue with the linux ditro iso images or windows iso images.

To install an operating system on an USB key it’s an other story…

I don’t think it works with raw images, or it didn’t last I looked, else I would have suggested it.

dd works a treat for it as well.

I had exactly the same problem with KDE Linux raw images. The solution for me was to format the stick as FAT32 with Partition Manager and then I could make a fresh working bootable USB drive.

@claydoh you’re right, Ventoy (great tool) doesn’t like raw images. I tried it.

Why is KDE publishing raw images instead of isos? What’s the difference? I’m confused.

Well, that was exciting. Fired up ISO Image writer, inserted my usb stick which was immediately mounted and displayed in Dolphin, so I hit what I thought was the unmount button (the little up arrow) next to it, and it disappeared from Dolphin, and the list of devices to write to in ISO Image Writer. Confusion reigned (and rained). So I plugged the stick in again, but this time unmounted it from the console. It was still listed in Dolphin but without the unmount button. And ISO Image Writer is now happily writing the raw image to my usb stick. I hope.

So, the obvious question now is, what the heck does that “unmount” icon next to the device in Dolphin actually do? More than just unmount the device obviously. It makes the device disappear completely from Dolphin. And everything else? Che?…

It ejects, or “safely removes” it, as the tooltip should show. It physically disconnects it, if you will.

It is annoying (and a discussion point off and on over the years).

For this burning tool you just need to make sure the USB stick isn’t set to automount, or manually unmount it. Partition Manager can do that.

@claydoh thanks for the clarification. I finally figured out it must have been something like that.
