FYI Teething problems with 6.5: Auth dialogs don't focus, Blur brightens, clipboard being odd, changes to some widgets

Edit: Nevermind the original intention of this thread was “is this really a bug?”. It’s really bugs, so scroll to the bottom for some FYI  Title edited accordingly

TLDR:

Focus stealing in ‘medium’ may be overly effective and force authentication dialogs to the background
Workaround: use ‘low’
Blur effect brightens as well
Workaround: disable blur
3rd party widgets (eg panel-spacer-extended) may be broken by a change to an existing plasma widget
Workaround: none. wait, the dev is on it.
CopyQ can’t see the clipboard
Workaround: none yet, I’m trying!

The original post follows:
Not sure which of these to file bugs on, any advice?

Logged in, my Panel Spacer Extended and System monitor widgets (among possibly others, unsure) are dead.
Edit: just learned that the spacer extended widget is broken by a regression, so ignore that one

Right clicked them, my colour scheme is dead, the menus are stock breeze colour with some transparency (they should be solid black)

Opened a terminal, colours are wrong there, too (stock breeze colours with transparency)

Ran sudo [stuff] to roll my system back, GUI authentication prompt (via ksshaskpass) didn’t get focus (the prompt was at the back of the stack of windows, had to alt+tab to it)

That’s as far as I got. Should we be expecting problems with widgets, colour schemes and focus? When it’s this instantly dead in multiple ways, it feels more like something went wrong here on my PC, than actual bugs that got past testers, but perhaps just nobody tested these things, I don’t know.

Can anyone confirm these things are working on their end? Particularly focus on ksshaskpass, and custom colour schemes, those are both critical for me.

Thanks for any advice.

You didn’t specify what distribution you’re using, which is pretty important here. We can’t control what distributions do, just like 3rd party widgets.

It’s opensuse, but if the problem is distro specific I’ll find out. I’m just trying to find out if it’s just me or if others also have these problems, I’ll get to “who are the others?” after that

Do ksshaskpass dialogs fail to be given focus from konsole for you, too?

Oops another late edit: regarding 3rd party widgets, the 3rd party widget was broken by a change in a 1st party widget, and I edited my post about a minute after I posted it to say to ignore that one, since I’d confirmed that it was not a ‘me problem’. The system monitor widget I mentioned is 1st party and I’ve read about others with trouble with it in text-only mode, but that’s not me, so I’m still not sure.

If you are talking about widgets in blank using text, here is a thread about this:

Seems related to Qt 6.10.

I have also openSUSE TW but the thread was opened by one user in Arch.

Regards

Still not fixed in plasma 6.5. The bug related to Qt 6.10 still there.

Never mind guys thanks, I’ll just file bugs for all of it.

The focus bug is known https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=509990

The colour of popups and konsole appear to be related, as disabling the blur kwin effect (the built-in 1st party one, not betterblur or anything, I don’t use those) fixes the popups and disabling the background blur in konsole fixes the colour.

I’ve figured out that much, but not filed a bug yet, I would prefer to be more specific about it to make the bug report higher quality so I’m off to check the source for changes, if anyone has any pointers about changes to blur in kde since 6.4.5 that would be super helpful! Edit: nevermind, bug is known and reported.

I’ve just discovered that the collection of screenshots I took for the bug report for the blur effect increasing brightness, are lost forever, because copyq can’t see my clipboard any more.

Perhaps not a KDE bug (or perhaps it is, I don’t know) but worthy of warning others as soon as I see it.

Bug report for that one is over here

Apparently this is also known, from the 6.5 release notes:

We’re also following up on an intentional change to the blur effect that unintentionally made it uglier in some cases.

Reddit thread about it (50 upvotes, was posted 2 hours after this)

More broken stuff: Mic mute now mutes everything. Also a known bug (I reported it in August) workaround here https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=508170

Still broken and no workaround I know of yet (I’ll be sure to share when I find one): CopyQ

And to leave it on a bright note: Fixed stuff: plasma panel spacer widget fix is on the KDE store.
Also…Wait til it comes from a more authoritative source before you celebrate, but I’ve run traces and they are very promising: nvidia frame pacing and VRR. You read it right, team green. This is HUGE. HUGE.

According to the timestamps here I’ve done nothing but troubleshoot plasma for 19 hours straight. I did nuke a leftover burger in the middle, that’s healthy, right?

Found and fixed the problem with copyq, the Qt5 lib that was notifying of clipboard changes, wasn’t, any more. That’ll be effecting arch, debian, suse…I think everyone but fedora/redhat. I’ve fed back the fix upstream so it should get to everyone soon.

I’m cooked. Totally worth spending one weekend every few months to give something back to KDE and the awesome app devs who give us all so much every single day.
