Is KDE neon 24.04 in the near future?

Hello,

KDE neon, what is the progress of the latest Ubuntu LTS release (24.04) build? Is there anywhere I can find information about this?

There is no tracker, nor any ISO images as of yet. Historically, upgrades to the new base have happened after Ubuntu releases it’s first updated LTS ‘point’ release ISO, which is where they also turn on LTS-to-LTS upgrades. This is was very recently pushed back to the end of August for 24.04.

The Noble repos seem complete, other than upgrade related stuff, so many things are in place.

The only real place for info would be chatting with the folks in irc/matrix.

Thanks for the update.

Any plans to upgrade from the actual 22.04 builds to the 24.04 without re-install?

Yes, upgrades have always been available. It works the same as it does in *buntu.

Thanks for the information.

LOL. Last time I had to update Ubuntu 22.04 to 24.04 (through the dedicated tool) it was impossible to upgrade. Don’t remember well of the reason but it was related to some packages conflicts.
Hope it will be more simple and less painful on KDE Neon.

Everyone’s systems are different, and upgrades are always a potential pain point no matter the distro.

I usually have a well- customized OS in terms of services, complied software, and external sources, and don’t have issues with upgrades, but I also know that this doesn’t mean everyone will have the same experience.

The upgrade tool and process is pure *buntu, fwiw.

If you are concerned, a safe bet for any Ubuntu based system is to revert any PPAs back to stock sources using ppa-purge. This in my experience is usually where the package conflicts come from, particularly if they provide things that are ultra current, and newer than what’s in 24.04. Video driver and Mesa PPAs, for example . Some of these do mention doing this before upgrades.

Thanks for the advise.
When it will be available, do you recommend using for 24.04 LTS (noble) upgrade :
$ sudo apt update
$ sudo apt list --upgradable | more
$ sudo apt upgrade
?

I have not had any issues upgrading in the past but have always made fresh installs (rather than carry over any not needed package or config setting).

If it’s for experiments, it’s normal but we can’t do that when using an OS as a daily driver. There are too many programs and parameters to reload.

Jut make sure your system is updated before beginning. You won’t see a prompt unless you are, I think. You won’t need to do anything special. Using Discover is fine.

If you want to update on the command line before the OS upgrade, you will see a message when using apt upgrade. You want to use apt full-upgrade on a fast-moving target like neon. Or use pkcon as the warning message will show you, and others will insist that you use.

Given that many Kubuntu users are reporting all sorts of problems with the point release - oddly many of them the same kinds of problems when we had with the P6 update for Neon - I have stopped blaming Plasma or Neon for the problems, and have fully turned my attention to the 6.x series of kernels which IMO are the cause. The fact that people are seeing the same issues in Arch, Fedora or Suse with Gnome, in X11 and Wayland, with AMD, Intel, or Nvidia… it aint KDE. The only commonality is the Kernel. I think Linus broke userspace.

At this point my concerns about the point release seem to be valid, and I remain unsure of doing the rebase anytime soon, if at all. Neon is getting old, especially glibc and other libs, but 24.04 has too many of the same problems we have been seeing of late with Plasma, yet its still on P5, and 24.04.1 seems to be making them worse. It is quite the contrast to 22.04, which was flawless, even with KDE backports.

I have indeed noticed way too many library related issues when testing different distributions in 24.4.x. So, for you, it’s the kernel the culprit? And what does Linus have to do with it now?

Anyway, my everyday version is still KDE Neon based on 22.04 LTS and I wouldn’t change it until I have verified the stability and usability of the 24.04.x

It was a joke. Linus is the lead Kernel dev, and is famous for saying “don’t break user space”.

Ah. Ok. wasn’t aware of that sentence :wink:

Anyone knows if it’s possible to upgrade from KDE Neon 22.04 to 24.04 directly from the live ISO? If yes, any process details are welcome.

I suspect not at this time as the 24.04 version is still in development - but as with previous updates I am sure this option will be available once it is is released.

I did a fresh install of the latest ‘unstable’ iso a few days ago, which is 24.04, and after a few days of testing this works without any problems. I have added all my ususual programmes, epson printer & scanner and nvivida driver.
