Current date, what Neon edition (user/testing/unstable) you started with, how the upgrade or install went, how the final install is working

This is still early testing so backup or don’t do it on valuable machines.

ISOs labelled “release” are made from in-progress builds so don’t use them, use the ‘user’, ‘testing’ and ‘unstable’ ones.

Very good I have made the rebase twice already. I have a question for this testing (and more brodely for kde testing): is it better to test on KDE Neon Testing or Unstable?

My intention is to test KDE/Plasma on a touchscreen device and maide some report (I am no dev) and suggestion to help improve. The device is configured to dual boot previously with Neon Unstable and an Arch (Endeavour OS). But EOS was laggy now I have Unstable and Testin and wonder which one to keep?

This depends what you want to be testing. If you want to test Plasma 6.2 (currently in Beta) then use the Neon Testing edition which is build from “git stable” branches. If you want to test what will become Plasma 6.3 then use Neon Unstable edition. Both will contain untested code so not reliable to use as daily driver machines.

So I have a Dell R14 workstation which had:

• ubuntu 23.04
• neon-user-22.04
• windows 11

I booted with the neon-user-24.04, selected replace partition, selected 23.04, configured LUKS en went for it.

It went absolutely great! No issues!

I used:

• neon-noble-user-current.iso 2024-09-30 11:00 2.6G

I’m currently testing with Neon Unstable, and it won’t let me proceed

Strange thing is that this is a fresh install. Experience:
OS-release: KDE Neon Unstable Edition / Noble / current ISO
Versions? :: well the latest Unstable of course.
Iso verified with GOOD signature.

Bugs i noticed -
Initial boot screen logo is not visible, it appears to skip the animation / black screen … it does appear to be loading just not visible

• the shutdown animation does work.

Any other bugs so far? -
No everything else works fine. Nothing worth mentioning besides -
Firefox needed to be reinstalled otherwise it was not executing correctly maybe something to do with the profile.
pkcon remove firefox
pkcon install firefox. Fixes this issue.

Anything else to add?
Not really besides that I’m new here, and would like to contribute to at least something as a learn Linux systems.

• this distro is more stable than anything else ive used thus far , as i tend to try out the latest available distros even with my old set up…

• the installer worked perfectly this time. In the past previous jammy release give me issues with formatting my drives which would lead to incorrect swapfile / swap to hibernate, so that appears to be fixed in the upcoming releases.

Tested on my Neon Unstable VM with GPU passthrough (RTX 4060)

While the upgraded worked in the end, it appears to have crashed my display along the way.

I had to finish the updates normally with apt install -f and dpkg --configure -a.

In the end, Plasma Wayland won’t start (X11 starts up).

Mostly stock Neon User edition install on the Intel laptop (Chromebook) had zero issues. No PPAs or anything.

On my Intel PC, a two year old install of 22.04, with some system level upgrades and having been used in three different PCs over that time had distro upgrade failures unless I downgraded back to stock from certain PPAs:

1. The Kisak Mesa PPA
2. This Libreoffice one
3. Upgrading to a full pipewire/wireplumber via Debian-pipewire

#1 and #2 were easily reverted via ppa-purge. Kisak actually recommends to downgrade before distro release upgrades, but I decided to test it anyway.

#3 is very problematic, as it involves not only downgrading 2 different sources, it also involves uninstalling the extra packages installed, as well as disabling services and re-enabling the old ones, plus dealing with a misconfigured package from the PPA requiring some minor dpkg foo.

Even with all that, I still could not successfully deal with the broken dependencies. I did manage to fumble through it on the third go, using a temporary apt pin, but when trying to reproduce the success on the fourth, my notes must must have been bad, as I still had broken dependencies.

Thank you to system snapshots for at least being able to provide identical starting points for experimentation and fun

Note that these PPA issues are not specific to neon here, any Ubuntu or similar system can face similar issues at upgrade time. Any extra source that provides things that are already newer than where you are upgrading to is a potential problem causer, but it is mainly the ones that involve system level bits, like drivers and audio components or a large set of packages (like Libreoffice).
The smaller application based ones like Openshot, Timeshift, and qbittorrent didn’t pose any issues fore me.
