How might I diagnose this? The problem is how sporadic it is; must I always invoke spectacle-6.6.4-1.fc44 as strace spectacle…?

@reisub, if you refer to discuss.kde.org/t/40789/12, I doubt it; it should be writing these to the filesystem, rather than the clipboard.
