I am 75, been doing this computer stuff somce the time when the Apple II C was a hot thing with its massive 128 KB floppy drive storage, and have encountered many anolomies and also some significant enjoyment along the way. I started my video editing first with Director 200 (with its need to determine the stop and stop intervals of my analog tape-based cams. I graduated to Vegas Video when it was introduced by Sound Forge out of Madison Wisconson.
Theses days, as a retiree, I put great stock in FOSS applications, among which Kdenlive is a brightly shining light. But, it has seemed that after finishing one project and moving onto the next, I had learned nothing about the app. I still ran into problems draggin clips from the project bin to the timeline - that nasty little red box that would take over my cursor.
Today, I discovered the cause of my problems: I didn’t have a timeline in my active session. I discovered this when, in frustration, I pulled down the help menu and did a search on timeline. When I clicked to open the relevant help topic, what appeared was not written suggestions, but a small, live timeline which I was able to drag down to where a timeline should be. I then dragged the edges of the timeline box to expand it. Lo and behold, I was able to successfully drag or “V” clips from my bin and have a great editing session. I see nothing in online comments or in the documentation discussing this behavior, and only post it here in the event that some other newbie experiences the same issue. Now, I need to get back to my editing (Kdenlive had stopped responding . . . I hope I am not forced to close the program. Thanks for reading.
