What's the difference between these two tools?

What’s the difference between the Discover application, and the Software application? Based on their descriptions, and my limited use of both (I’m new to KDE Plasma) they seem synonymous and redundant. Do they each do the same thing?

please provide the output of kinfo

generally you only need one of those type of GUI package managers… i’m not familiar with the software one.

do you have more than on DE installed?

Sorry Sky, here you go….

I do have two DEs installed (Plasma and Cinnamon), but just imaged this machine and so far have only used Plasma.

the other one is coming from cinnamon.

i would suggest using discover for plasma and software center for cinnamon as they are each likely tuned to the desktop they are intended to service.

I had no idea. Thanks!

yet another reason not to have more than one desktop environment installed.

Agreed - but don’t say that on reddit…

Anyway, if you want to clean it up, make sure you don’t have multiple services/softwares/defaults set up, you can run a backup (back-in-time or similar) and then you could do a clean install with just Plasma and re-import any settings you had.

I’m biased, as its developer, but Mending Wall will let you keep multiple desktop environments without this sort of issue. Specifically, it can keep core apps like this to their respective desktop environment: Discover for KDE and Software for Gnome and Cinnamon (as already mentioned). Happy to help if it’s unclear how to use it.
