Stemming from my ancient days in Unix/X/Motif, I would suggest an addition to the Window Placement options.
Currently, it appears that the default placement is ‘upper left’. You can specify center or other options. If you open a window on a blank desktop, where it appears will be governed by your selected option.
I would like to see a ‘cascade’-like capability, i.e., position controlled by option one if window is blank, then by some secondary option if not.
E.g., "Centered’ followed by ‘minimal overlap’

most of the time applications will remember where you last placed the window and open it there rather than follow this setting… so it’s already a fallback.
so are you suggesting a tertiary fallback to follow the main

Yes, I think from your graphic, that is the idea. My personal desire would be able to specify “Centered, then minimal overlapping”. Back in my Motif memory, I think they called it “intelligent placement” or some-such. It appears that using “Minimal Overlapping” defaults to “Top Left” when opening a window on a blank desktop. If there was some way to set the default, that would satisfy my ‘wants’.
BTW, on my system, most of the apps I use do NOT remember where they were last placed, but open where the setting dictates. I wonder if yet another placement option should be “Application Memory” or something.
you can make window rules that control placement, but make them too broad and everything will show up in the same place… make them too narrow it will only work with that one window type/application.
