How about a new logo for Plasma 6?

Oh I think the logic is to focus it - or so it was explained to me (not to sound like the worlds most selfish human but “MINE!” ) usually with these things it makes sense having one person doing it but with input. But @Paul_Brown and promo team can weigh in there.

BUT trust me there is a ton of things cropping up all the time, so if you want there is always stuff to do AND I dont know the exact scope of this anyway

(Like most I don’t have reddit, so didn’t know there was a thread there)

EDIT: the deal with the logo / icon thing isn’t very clear for now (saturday) so at the moment lets just see it as a fun discussion and pick up monday morning when we know more. We don’t wanna trundle in and step on toes unintentionally. BUT this is all being a really wholesome and great thread with feedback (and @mr_hot_h3ad seems to be signing up as tribute for future work @Paul_Brown … we have lured another victim… err I mean contributor… in to the fold! )

Go for it! For now the focus is just for promo material anyway so no stress you too-young-too-old grouch

I’m not sure separating the promo logo from the actual logo is the best idea.
Maybe if we only use it a few, strictly plasma-6 related posts it could work…

I miss in this discourse forum the emoji function, so I have to make an extra post for it.
Unfortunately.

Silly question:
Why change plasma logo if style of desktop are the same as in Plasma 5?
Change in Plasma 5 was right because jump from oxygen to breeze, but if i not wrong Plasma 6 still using breeze.

I would say, before we propose designs. Let’s talk about the things we want the new logo to be. Can you answer these questions:

  1. What do we want the logo to feel like?
  2. What impression do we want to leave on our users when they identify our brand?
  3. What are the negative perceptions of the previous logo?

Let’s keep in mind that we are not designing a logo just for Plasma 6. Whatever we choose, will be used for many years.

  1. What do we want the logo to feel like?
1.1 Dynamic, friendly, clickable, approachable, simple shapes
  2. What impression do we want to leave on our users when they identify our brand?
2.2 Recognition, easily reproducible, tied to the Plasma name
  3. What are the negative perceptions of the previous logo?
    3.3 Sharp, small shapes, scattered

Here is my rendition of this idea. By the way, I proposed a similar logo years ago for KDE 4. Though it had a good reception, it was not selected. Proposing this change right now, I think makes sense. I also noticed that I failed to provide good connection to the main logo. I think we can do that with this iteration.

My inspiration is the sun. As the closest plasma example we have to earth and a life-giving force, it felt like the perfect inspiration. It’s a simple form that evokes easy access, easily repeatable. It contains the 3 dots that inspired the first Plasma logo and have been integrated into the rest of our logos. Put together, it can do for an easy icon. If done well, you could even add a few glow animations on hover that would look super cool. I used a correlated color palette for easy color connection, though I am not married to the colors as others may suggest many different combinations.

Here is my proposal:

You just walked in and said, in your best Sheriff Bart, “Excuse me while I whip this out.”

It’s good. Actually, it’s better than good. It blew everything else out of the water. I really like it.

I like this a lot. Sometimes less is more.

@Anditosan Its awesome. Have just sketches so far (the ones posted above) but you wanna take this? Again I think this is just for promo material not logo though - so pick up the conversation with promo team that I had in the promo channel. That way its not duplicated effort.

Really good - thank you!

  • The main thing I would change are the dot’s colours:
exchange the yellow/orange for a red, so the logo will keep the “RGB” dots.
  • And perhaps make the dot’s colours a bit more “friendly” in tone, if you can understand what I mean by that…
  • Another concern would be, if the three dots get too small when you scale the logo down (e.g. for a Plasma panel).

If I understand right, you want me to take up the conversation with Promo?

Note that even though it is originating from Promo, the logo would also have to be used in the Plasma UI. There are a ton of places where it’s featured. Most prominently, the application panel.

The slogan promo decided on is “Choice”.

Logo with the sun looks very interesting. All variations are good and appropriate in different contexts. I wish this would be the end of discussion already. I’d really like to see a complete theme based on this, logo, a splash screen and so on

I don’t see how the circles logo manages to do that… Although I don’t have a clear idea of how you would represent that either.

Oof, yes, very much agree here.

The circle logo does tick two of the boxes, but fails on the second one.

Also, it suggests that Plasma got… er… “chunky”. Maybe changing the distribution and proportions would help.
